A nivel mundial, las estadísticas oficiales están por debajo del número real de abortos y se basan en información parcial. En algunos países, como Guatemala, no hay datos disponibles. En India (que, según la mayoría de las estimaciones, está en segundo lugar después de China en cuanto al número de abortos), los datos oficiales son parciales, por lo cual no pueden usarse.
Nuestra fuente de datos es el Informe Mundial del Aborto (IMA) [Abortion Worldwide Report (AWR)] (Jacobson y Johnston, 2018). En 1920, Rusia se convirtió en el primer país del mundo en legalizar el aborto. Tras la desintegración de la URSS, el aborto alcanzó un punto álgido en 1993. Cada 1000 bebés nacidos, otros 2 352 bebés fueron abortados. El 70,17 % de todos los embarazos conocidos terminaron en aborto.
Desde entonces, el aborto ha disminuido de manera constante. En 2012, Rusia restringió severamente el aborto después de las 12 semanas y continúa brindando incentivos financieros sustanciales por nacimiento para compensar su terrible declive demográfico.
